Launch of the Brixton Pound

The B£ project has been initiated by Transition Town Brixton (TTB), a community-led organisation for action on energy issues and climate change. TTB seeks to engage the whole community in visioning, planning and achieving Transition to a better low energy future, where local resilience is key. TTB working groups focus on “energy descent” in all areas of our lives – business and economy, skills and training, food and growing, buildings, transport, waste and resources, and more.

I was delighted to be asked to attend the launch of the Brixton Pound, the first of its kind in London. The Lambeth Town Hall assembly rooms was packed with an enthusiastic crowd eager both to be the first to get their hands on the new new B£ and to show their support for this initiative.

Many local businesses were also there and will be offering discounts to people using the Brixton Pound in their shops.

Mayor with local businessman who sells Ossie's Fresh Ginger - It's fantastic so text Ossie on 07799555318 to find out where to get some and tell him the Mayor of Lambeth sent you!

I often correct people who mistakingly call the town hall ‘Brixton Town Hall’, when it is infact Lambeth Town Hall. Well tonight I think it was Brixton Town Hall given the number of Brixtonians who had come out to support the event, the market and all the local traders.

I spoke of how there had been a market in Brixton since the first stalls appeared in Atlantic Lane in the 1870s, and that it was my hope that with the communities support of the Brixton Pound we would have a Brixton Market for another 140 years and beyond.

It was an amazing evening that demonstrated the Brixton community is more that just alive and well but a passionate and determined community that is pulling together during uncertain times.
